    CAD Data Limitations

    1. Assembly data shows the assembly drawings in the concept design phase. The sole purpose of the data is to explain the structure and functionality of the assembly and is not considered nor to be used as a final design.
You will need to edit the Data so that it meets your specific design conditions.
    2. Unit assembly Data consists of some sub-assemblies.
It is configured so that each sub-assembly unit can be used as it is or edited.
    3. * The part in the frame is a sub-assembly unit.

    4. The Data for fabricated parts is based on easy-to-edit dimensions and shapes in sketches and histories.
    5. The Data including the third-part components are made by the Company.

Application Overview

Purpose

  • Manual bending fixture.
  • A sheet metal workpiece is clamped down by a toggle clamp on one side, then bent horizontally by another toggle clamp on the opposite side. There is an additional vertical mechanism that applies a second bend vertically.

Points for use

  • Manual sheet metal bending operation.

Target workpiece

  • Sheet metal parts
    Dims.: W10 x D27 x t0.5

Design Specifications

Operating Conditions or Design Requirements

  • External dims.: W207 x D42 x H100
  • Toggle clamp stroke: 14mm
  • Spring-back countermeasure slide stroke (Vertical direction): 17.1mm

It is a phenomenon occurring with sheet metal work where applied forming slightly returns when the press tool is released.

Required Performance

  • Hardness of die , bending

It is a blade part of press operation directly contacting the material to punch holes. From its concave shape, it is often referred as the female.

    punch

It is a blade part of press operation directly contacting the material to punch holes. From its convex shape, it is often referred as the male.

, and pusher is HRC58 or higher (440C Stainless Steel heat treated)

Selection Criteria for Main Components

  • Toggle clamp
    • Side push type is selected since a horizontal motion is needed.
    • Clamping force on the sheet metal workpiece is needed therefore another toggle clamp is added.
    • Clamping force on the bending side must exceed the required force to bend the workpiece.

Design Evaluation

Verification of main components

  • Verify that the selected toggle clamp can withstand the required bending force.
  • Bending force
    • Count: C = 2.0
    • Bend length: B = 5mm
    • Thickness: t = 0.4mm
    • Tensile strength: Ts = 270N/mm² (Material: Low Carbon Steel)
    • Formula: Bending force P = (C / 3) × B × t × Ts= (2 / 3) × 5 × 0.4 × 270 = 360 N
    • Toggle clamp clamping force: 450N > Bending force: 360N

Other Design Consideration

  • It may be necessary to bend more than 90 degrees due to spring-back phenomenon, apply force accordingly to material thickness and properties.
  • A spring plunger was mounted to the vertical mechanism to prevent the vertical motion.
