  • Leveling bolts
    • Leveling bolts are a lower cost alternative to achieve the desired flatness than machining is. Leveling bolts will divide the unit into segments so fine adjustments can be made.

  • Calculate the table deflection caused by the work piece.
  • Base plate
    • Weight: As the adjust plate width supporting the base plate
    • Width(b) x Length(L) x Specific gravity = 100 × 410 × 25 × 0.0027 = 2767.5g = 27N
    • Beam deflection by own weight: δ1 = 5wL⁴ / 384E
    • Beam length: L = 410mm
    • Uniformly distributed load: w = Own weight / Beam length = 27 / 410 = 0.06615
    • Young's modulus: E = 69300MPa
    • Cross sectional moment of inertia: I = bh³ / 12 = 100 × 254 = 130208mm⁴δ1 = 5 × 0.06615 × 410⁴ / (384×69300 x 130208) = 0.0027mm
    • Deflection due to workpiece own load: δ2 = WL³ / 48EIδ2 = 10 × 410³ / (48 × 69300 × 130208) = 0.0016mm
    • Total deflection = 0.0027 + 0.0016 = 0.0043mm < 0.005mm

Other Design Consideration

  • A leveling bolt is placed at each of the four corners of a base plate, making flatness adjustments on each plate possible.
  • Aluminum extrusion structure can be segmented for easy transportation.
