Machine keys are parts used to fasten components such as gears, pulleys, sprockets and couplings to rotary shafts. They are used for applications that transmit power in machineries such as motors and reduction drives. Several types of machine keys are available. Parallel keys have the simplest structure. There are also specially shaped varieties such as taper keys and Woodruff keys. Machine keys come in various shapes, such as types with squared-off or rounded ends. There are also product lineups that include models with pre-drilled counterbore holes, taps or the like. Key sizes are defined by JIS standards in Japan. The applicable standard has been revised, so some models are compatible with the new standard and some with the old. The right machine key model should be selected by matching it to the size of the drive unit's shaft and keyway.  ▲ Close
