[What is the ATEX Directive?]
Compliance with the ATEX Directive is required for equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres within the EU from July 1, 2003.
■ CE Mark and ATEX
The ATEX Directive is part of the CE Mark scheme and incorporates existing European explosion-proof standards.
■ Goals of the ATEX Directive
The principal goals of ATEX are as follows.
· Prevention of static charge
· Prevention of ignition by sparks generated by friction, impact and wear
· Prevention of ignition due to temperature rise due to the same　causes as above
· Manufacturers are responsible
· Certified by zone/category
■ Zone/category classifications
ATEX categorizes targets for application by each classification of danger zone.
· Zone 0: Category 1
Potential for explosive atmosphere to be present (zone): Continuous or long-term, >1,000 hours/year
· Zone 1: Category 2
Potential for explosive atmosphere to be present (zone): Occasional, 10 to 1,000 hours/year
· Zone 2: Category 3
Potential for explosive atmosphere to be present (zone): Unlikely or short-term, <10 hours/year
