Aluminum Extrusions Quick Guide

Structures or enclosures for machinery that can be light (moderate loads), easy to assemble and modular are needed to support equipment, enclose and protect equipment, insert fastening components and for that MISUMI offers excellent design flexibility and one of the widest ranges of extrusions styles and accessories on the market. You can customize according to your design specifications by using our online store.

Aluminum Extrusions

Aluminum extrusion process starts when the die is created, the raw material (aluminum bar) is ready then it’s heated to about 800-925 ºF, goes through to the press until the extruded shape is fitted out on the other end.

Extrusions are suitable for light and medium duty applications where permanent rigidity is not required. Extrusions are very common in the industry, used on machine frames, table surfaces, 3D printers, safety guards, etc.

Features

MISUMI offers:

  • Cut to length extrusions from 50-4000 mm in 0.5 mm increments
  • 4 main series styles (5, 6, 8, 8-45)
  • Different anodizing options
  • Internal/external bracket options
  • Panel mounting options
  • Alterations available

Many accessories available including hinges, handles, mounting brackets and panels, leveling feet, dampers and more.

Applications

Aluminum Extrusions are used as structural manner for equipment cover, base to place equipment, booth, conveyor and actuators.

Required items for assembly

In addition to the aluminum frames, the basic configuration for building an application includes the brackets and jointing methods, as well as the T-nuts that hold the brackets in place for the pre- and post- assembly.

Other accessories according to usage

Some aluminum extrusions accessories are used to upgrade your assembly depending the needs of your application.
MISUMI offers a wide selection of items to add to your aluminum framing structure.

Note: Extrusion hardware accessories are interchangeable within MISUMI as long as the series number remains the same.

Extrusion Types

MISUMI offers different basic extrusion sizes from 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm, 45 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm, 80 mm, 90 mm and 100 mm. Sizes are available in several different configurations.

Q&A

1. What is the cut charge for extrusions?

Extrusions are cut to length as standard from 50-4000 mm in 0.5 mm increments.

2. What is the length tolerance of extrusion?

Our extrusions have a standard tolerance of +/- 0.5 mm.

3. Is there any surface treatment on the extrusions?

Our extrusions are supplied with a clear anodized finish as a standard to help protect the extrusion, but we also have available the black anodize option.

Design Restrictions

Aluminum is a weaker material than steel (allowable load is lighter at the same side length).

Bolt screw is used for the connection, the joint is not as strong as a weld.
– Be very careful in areas subject to vibration, the bolts may be loosen.

Special care should be taken with equipment that requires precise rigidity, aluminum extrusions may not be the best choice.
